Burbank, CA May 15, 2013-- Les Films en Vrac will debut its first promo reel from “Land of the Bears” at the Cannes Film Festival, providing an exclusive look into the lives of the brown bears of northeast Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula.

Five minutes of footage from the film will be screened in 3D at the Star Theater in Cannes on Friday, May 17, at 6:00 P.M. local time, and again at 6:45 P.M. Director Guillaume Vincent and stereographer Manning Tillman will be on hand to answer questions following the screenings.

The French 3D documentary follows the adventures of a four-year-old bear as he starts out on his own. Away from his mother for the first time amid hundreds of other bears, he must contend with grueling conditions in one of nature’s most spectacular settings.

CAMERON | PACE Group (CPG) engineers and stereographers supported the production, which spanned all of 2012 and consisted of eight separate trips to the rugged peninsula.

“I chose to shoot in 3D because I desired to truly immerse the audience,” said Vincent, who also helmed the award-winning “The Monkey Who Crossed the Sea.” “I wanted to give the viewers an opportunity to get as close to the bears as possible, and 3D allowed us to do this from both a visual and emotional perspective.”

"The challenges of capturing live-action animal behavior in nature are significant," said Vince Pace, co-chair and co-founder of CPG. "It takes a team of talented, skilled individuals. We're proud to be part of an effort that rewards the audience with a remarkable, realistic experience of living with the bears."

Capturing the bears in their natural habitat provided a unique set of obstacles.

There are no roads or trails near the bears’ habitat. Helicopters would drop the production crew off in the middle of the forest and return a week or two later to take them back to Petropavlosk, a nearby city. “We had a dozen people packing in the 3D equipment (CPG’s ultralight handheld rigs equipped with Red Epic™ cameras) by hand to lakes, to geysers, to mountains,” recalls Vincent. “The CPG team did a fantastic job of ensuring that the equipment was fully functional under extremely difficult conditions, including torrential rain and bitter cold.”

Vincent believes that naturalist filmmaking will become increasingly reliant on 3D because of the immersive power of the medium. “3D is made for wildlife,” he said. “It is the best way to capture the subtleties of the natural environment. Filming in nature is about the details, and 3D allows a filmmaker to highlight every last one.”

“Land of the Bears” will be released in early 2014.
